In lieu of a final exam, our Creative Writing students are submitting final projects, each of which should be a significant piece of work (i.e. a collection of 15-20 short poems, a 15-20 page short story, etc.). This is intended to be something that students work on throughout the semester.

Here is a sneak peek of senior Riley Rilette's intended poetry anthology, each poem in which takes a nostalgic look at beloved classic childhood movies:

Neverland

Soaring through the deep blue skies,

Like a plane, they’re up so high.

A group of kids, one girl, three guys

view is one of a bird’s eye

Up above their city brights

Fluttering, wheeling, floating, feeling

Following their guide of green tights

They’re amazed, they’re astonished, they asked if they’re dreaming

Pirates and mermaids and lost-boys and fairies

A place so glorious, thought to be hallucination

Welcomed by a group of misfits, Peter’s adversaries

Their happiest thoughts, their mind’s creation

Pixie dust and a memory was all you needed to fly

Peter Pan, leader of the pack

To this far off fantasy, your retirement won't ever come by

Clink clank went the steel, we were under attack

Brunt from the crook, ole Captain Hook

Fighting a boy whose main weapon was joy

Amidst the brawl Cap gave the croc one look

The faint tick tock was enough to destroy his ploy

Although falsely trusted, their beauty was heavenly

Sat atop a rock, eyes yearn in lust

Ever enchanting, envious of our Wendy

Left bewildered, now nymphs hold no trust

In sorrow we are, to once again lead our normal lives

To go back to our town, awaiting Peter to come

Sad to wave our final goodbyes

Unready to hear the last beat drum

I never thought I’d ever land in Neverland

But to go back is now my everyday demand
