One of the greatest benefits of the development of free verse poetry is that poets are literally free to use rhyme scheme and meter, not use rhyme scheme and meter, use it on one poem, not use it on another, etc. Ultimately, free verse poetry allows the writer absolute freedom to focus on personal expression in whatever means the writer sees fit. Here is a poignant example from senior Kaitlyn Edwards:

In the Dark

A small candle illuminated my room,

its shadows danced across the walls.

The wind howled through my window cracks,

as rain poured down from the sky.

Something about the rain was so calming,

It gave me a sense of solitude.

A gust of cold air seeped in,

it chilled me down to the spine.

Eventually the power would come back on,

so I tried to enjoy every moment left.

In the dark.
