We know that poetry (and all art in general) depends on capturing inspiration, and part of what we learn in Creative Writing class is how to capture inspiration when it strikes.

However, we are also treating Creative Writing as a craft, learning the skills to spin that creative spark into a work of art that will stand the test of time. One of our recent daily poetry challenges was to pick a sound device and a type of figurative language and build a poem around those requirements. Here is the submission from junior Taylor Armstrong:

Here I am, in my grave

Grave of dirt and sand.

Sand so white and pure

Purest of all the land.

Land so warm

Warm from the sun.

Sun so bright

Bright like the moon.

Moon in the sky

Sky so far away

Away from me.

When stuck in a grave

How grave can I be?
